The university received over $9.1 million in gifts from individuals and private foundations, topping the prior record set in 2002 of $7.7 million.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"highlight highlight-right\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-fDOcOM5moI&amp;feature=youtu.be\">View the Homecoming highlights video<\/a>.<\/aside>\n<p>The Troyers represent a six-decade-long legacy of connection and engagement to the university, said President Susan Schultz Huxman.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Margaret Martin Gehman, the namesake and first recipient of the award in 2005, was present to join her in honoring the Troyers. The award recognizes generous and exemplary leaders whose advocacy and support for 91大神 has had a transformational impact on the university\u2019s mission.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs we launch 91大神\u2019s second century, it is especially significant that we recognize Levi and Lillis Troyer, whose passionate engagement with 91大神 spans six decades,\u201d Huxman said. \u201cIn the year following Levi\u2019s graduation in 1976, the couple have devoted time and treasure to such an impactful extent that their legacy has been and will continue to be felt by students for many years to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_40091\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-40091\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2018\/10\/philanthropist-of-the-year-award-honors-the-generous-leadership-and-support-of-levi-and-lillis-troyer\/20181012-donor-appreciation-banquet-001-1000px\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-40091\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-40091\" src=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/is\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/10\/20181012-Donor-Appreciation-Banquet-001-1000px-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/10\/20181012-Donor-Appreciation-Banquet-001-1000px-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/10\/20181012-Donor-Appreciation-Banquet-001-1000px-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2018\/10\/20181012-Donor-Appreciation-Banquet-001-1000px.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-40091\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">President Susan Schultz Huxman addresses donors at Friday evening&#8217;s appreciation banquet.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The couple has funded scholarships for students with financial need as well as supported the 91大神 educations of their children and grandchildren. They have shared knowledge and expertise through terms on the 91大神 Board of Trustees, Levi from 1995-99 and Lillis from 2006-10.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, their influence can be seen in many capital campaign projects since the 1980s, including the development of central campus, the seminary building, Northlawn renovations, and both phases of University Commons.<\/p>\n<p>Their long relationship with the university began in the mid-\u201860s in Ohio, \u201cwhen Lillis and I loaded our station wagon and gathered up our two boys, to head to EMC, not knowing, you know, what we would encounter, and I must say that we met up with some extremely helpful and courteous people here \u2026 We felt very much at home right from the very beginning,\u201d Levi Troyer said.<\/p>\n<p>As he accepted the award, Troyer acknowledged the many wonderful people who \u201chelped us along the way to get to where we\u2019re at this evening.\u201d His wife and partner of 57 years, Lillis, has been a support and encouragement and perhaps the most deserving to receive the award, he said. And his father-in-law Emanuel Mullet, an entrepreneur in the Holmes County region, passed on his own time and treasure to the couple.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had the pleasure of working alongside him for 30-some years, and he was not only a business partner, but a mentor and a friend,\u201d Troyer said. \u201cFrom him also, we learned the blessings of sharing, because he was a benevolent person. We learned the blessing firsthand that he would express when he helped people many many times, so he certainly is deserving of this award this evening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 91大神 experience has impacted generations of his family, he added, with a broadened perspective on life, the sharing of their faith, and the emphasis on equality and social justice, expressed through Micah 6:8. \u201cWhat more can you say?\u201d he asked. \u201cIt is the essence of the Gospel.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is not the first recognition for the couple&#8217;s numerous philanthropic endeavors. In 2014, they were recognized with the Holmes County Chamber of Commerce Lifetime Achievement Award for contributions to area business as well as education, mission work, community service and economic development.<\/p>\n<p>The couple founded Walnut Hills Retirement Community in 1971 and were owner-operators for 37 years before creating a non-profit organization to run it (Walnut Hills is now an affiliate community of Greencroft Communities, based in Goshen, Indiana).
