{"id":43103,"date":"2019-09-06T13:05:15","date_gmt":"2019-09-06T17:05:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/?p=43103"},"modified":"2019-09-09T10:36:25","modified_gmt":"2019-09-09T14:36:25","slug":"getting-under-the-hood-linux-workshop-at-emu-features-expert-input-and-hands-on-practice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2019\/getting-under-the-hood-linux-workshop-at-emu-features-expert-input-and-hands-on-practice\/","title":{"rendered":"Getting \u2018under the hood\u2019: Linux workshop at 91大神 features expert input and hands-on practice"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>91大神 students curious about one of the most advanced computer operating systems had a unique opportunity recently: a practical workshop with presentations by experts in Linux.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Open to students, staff and \u201canybody curious to see what\u2019s under the hood of one of the most advanced operating systems,\u201d the August 26 event in the <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/science-seminars\/about-the-science-center\">Suter Science Center<\/a> offered participants hands-on practice, installation media and \u201ca ton of help and support,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/math\/cs\/\">computer science<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/engineering\/\">engineering<\/a> Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=szc6295\">Stefano Colafranceschi<\/a>, who organized the event.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAlthough the Unix heritage is important and the key of several modern systems, young students are not much aware of it,\u201d Colafranceschi said. \u201cThe Linux operating system is the key of many modern technologies and systems, but it\u2019s also an inspiring story of a very large and complex project accomplished \u2018together\u2019 for the human kind.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Expert researchers with whom Colafranceschi has collaborated provided presentations via Zoom on topics including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\u201cSegmentation FAULT! How to configure a Linux kernel\u201d by Marco Randazzo of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.idsia.ch\/\">Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence<\/a>;<\/li><li>\u201cRole of Linux in the quest for big data\u201d by Giuseppe lo Presti, senior software engineer at CERN IT;<\/li><li>\u201cLinux for Science: Data Acquisition Systems (DAQ) and large analysis frameworks\u201d by Vallary Bhopatkar of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anl.gov\/\">Argonne National Laboratory<\/a>; and<\/li><li>\u201cAdvanced Bash scripting\u201d by Stephen Butalla of the Florida Institute of Technology.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Based on the Unix platform, Linux was created in the early 1990s.
