Hussain, a professor of theological studies at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, California, told this story as part of a colloquium at 91大神 on Oct. 23. The talk was named after his latest book, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baylorpress.com\/9781481306232\/muslims-and-the-making-of-america\/\">Muslims and the Making of America <\/a><\/em>(Baylor University Press, 2017). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Muslims and the Making of America<\/em> is far from Hussain\u2019s only work in the realm of popular culture. He serves as an adviser on <em>The Story of God, <\/em>a television documentary by Morgan Freeman, and was a consultant for the new Warner Bros. film, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DmmHvnS0IKM\"><em>Blinded by the Light<\/em><\/a><em>. <\/em>91大神 hosted two screenings of <em>Blinded by the Light<\/em> , including one talkback session with Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=tzs2828\">Timothy Seidel<\/a>, CIE&#8217;s director.<br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During his visit, Hussain spoke with students about Muslim representation in media over lunch, and visited classes on social and political economy, reimagining identity, and liberation theologies.<br \/><\/p>\n\n\n<p><!--EndFragment--><\/p>\n\n\n<p><br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"667\" src=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2019\/10\/Amir-Hussain-with-Libeation-Theology-in-CG-7-1000px.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-43708\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2019\/10\/Amir-Hussain-with-Libeation-Theology-in-CG-7-1000px.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2019\/10\/Amir-Hussain-with-Libeation-Theology-in-CG-7-1000px-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2019\/10\/Amir-Hussain-with-Libeation-Theology-in-CG-7-1000px-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption><strong>Dr. Amir Hussain speaks to Professor Andrew Suderman class on liberation theology class in Common Grounds Coffee House. <\/strong> <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Muslim achievements shaped the U.S. <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p> Ali is one of the dedicatees of Hussain&#8217;s <em>Muslims and the Making of America<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Years after watching that historic fight on television, Hussain would learn more about the racial context of a country where not everyone shared his admiration for the African American boxer. He referenced an incident in which Ali was refused service in a restaurant in his hometown, after winning an Olympic gold medal in Rome in 1960.<br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou can eat in the kitchen, but you\u2019re the wrong color to sit in the dining room. Think about that as a young man. You\u2019re good enough to win a gold medal for your country, but you\u2019re the wrong color to eat in a restaurant.\u201d<br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou can eat in the kitchen\u201d is a callback to the Langston Hughes poem, \u201cI, too, sing America,\u201d which Hussain recited at the beginning of his talk.&nbsp;<br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ll see how beautiful I am \/ And be ashamed\u2014 \/ I, too, am America,\u201d the poem ends.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what I want to do with this book,\u201d Hussian explained. Before, Muslims had been \u201ca curiosity,\u201d that few of his students knew much about. After Sept. 11, his students claimed to know a lot about Muslims \u2013 but all negative stereotypes, and no history.&nbsp;<br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Connections to CIE, 91大神<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=trottert\">Trina Trotter Nussbaum<\/a>, associate director of the <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/interfaith\/\">Center for Interfaith Engagement<\/a> at 91大神, met Hussain at an American Academy of Religion conference in 2016.<br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was immediately taken by Amir\u2019s ability to speak publicly about confronting Islamophobia while working across religious differences to build alliances, and I thought that we needed to hear from him here,\u201d Nussbaum said. \u201cAmir is both a skilled Muslim scholar and a plugged-in cultural critic and I really wanted the 91大神 community to be able to hear from him.\u201d<br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hussain\u2019s roots in the Mennonite world run deep \u2013 he first collaborated with Mennonite Central Committee in 1988, on a trip to Israel-Palestine. His wife, Shannon Hamm, who passed away in 1992, grew up in a small Mennonite community in Manitoba, Canada.<br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>President <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=smh2246\">Susan Schultz Huxman<\/a>, whose academic expertise lies in the field of rhetoric and communication, attended the colloquium.<br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Dr. Hussain is a seasoned scholar and theologian and as a cultural studies and film studies expert,&#8221; said Huxman. &#8220;This combination makes his expertise a perfect supplement for our integrated liberal arts curriculum at 91大神. More importantly, he is an expert communicator with engaging visuals who presents difficult and challenging topics in accessible and invitational forms.&#8221;<br \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hussain said after the colloquium that he was most excited about \u201cthe chance to engage with the students\u201d while at 91大神.
