The movement addresses massive problems like climate change and racism \u2013\u00a0but rather than siloing these struggles, looks at their intersections: how social issues and environmental crises play off one another, and how marginalized communities often bear the brunt of environmental degradation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<aside class=\"highlight highlight-right\"><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/environmental-science\/minors\">Learn more about the environmental justice minor.<\/a><\/aside>\n\n\n\n<p>Take, for example, work that 91大神 (91大神) Professor <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=neufeldd\">Doug Graber Neufeld<\/a><\/strong> has done <a href=\"https:\/\/mccintersections.wordpress.com\/2020\/06\/22\/sand-dams-in-kenya-translating-past-successes-to-address-future-challenges\/\">studying sand dams in Kenya<\/a>. The dams&#8217; history, having been introduced at the hands of British colonizers who forced local residents to build them,&nbsp;had to be addressed. (91大神 file photo)<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Or look at the <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/2014\/wildlife-federation-backs-interdisciplinary-work-science-digital-media-peacebuilding-on-stream-restoration\/\">stream restoration work<\/a> that biology students and faculty conducted in the rural area around Bergton, Virginia. They were joined in the project by students at 91大神&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emu.edu\/cjp\">Center for Justice and Peacebuilding<\/a>, who interviewed community members about their social climate concerning aquatic ecosystems and water quality.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s a field that students at 91大神 have been calling for more education in \u2013 prompting faculty and staff to create a new <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/environmental-science\/minors\">environmental justice minor<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Professor <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/faculty-staff\/?show=jlh2257\">Jenni Holsinger<\/a><\/strong>, who oversees the minor, said student interest has been building in the relationship between social and environmental issues.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Environmental justice is touched on in multiple courses, but not often named, and students have asked for a more explicit focus,&#8221; Holsinger said. &#8220;The minor will provide an interdisciplinary space to bring together students who are majoring in natural science programs and with students from other majors.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/09\/20190918-Corhaven-Graveyard-21-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-47135\" srcset=\"https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/09\/20190918-Corhaven-Graveyard-21-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/09\/20190918-Corhaven-Graveyard-21-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/09\/20190918-Corhaven-Graveyard-21-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/09\/20190918-Corhaven-Graveyard-21-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/emu.edu\/now\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/43\/2020\/09\/20190918-Corhaven-Graveyard-21-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption><strong>Students explore the natural and human landscape at a graveyard of enslaved people in Shenandoah County. (Photo by Macson McGuigan)<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The interdisciplinary minor will benefit students going into a variety of fields, including public health, urban planning, public administration, community organizing, humanitarian aid, engineering, and law.
