Barron)\u2014as they gather at their family&#8217;s cabin for a weekend visit. When their parents (Laura T. It was based on the life of Kniss\u2019 great-grandfather, Lloy Kniss, who documented his experiences as a Mennonite conscientious objector in the book <em><a href=\"https:\/\/emu.tind.io\/record\/115256?ln=en\">I Couldn\u2019t Fight<\/a><\/em> (Herald Press, 1971).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBecause it\u2019s a period piece, it\u2019s much more expensive than something the two of us are able to finance ourselves,\u201d Kniss said. \u201cWe wanted to write something small that we could put together and own entirely ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After some brainstorming, the idea for <em>Never Not Yours <\/em>began to take shape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not the easiest film to pitch to an audience in terms of, \u2018Come watch this dramedy about this couple getting divorced and everything that comes out of that,\u2019\u201d Kniss said. \u201cWhat we like to talk about with this film is just how small it is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Filmed entirely in and around Nashville, Indiana, a town about an hour south of Indianapolis, the movie was shot in just eight days at the tail end of the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s a crazy short time to shoot a 110-page script,\u201d Kniss said. \u201cMost low-budget films are shot in 15 to 20 days. I don\u2019t think it was until the third or fourth day, when we had shot roughly half the movie, that we started to feel confident our plan would work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During filming, the five-member cast and seven-member crew lived together in the same cabin where the story takes place. \u201cTypically when you\u2019re making a movie, you go to set, you wrap, you go home, you sleep, and return the next day,\u201d Kniss said. \u201cThe 12 of us got really close because we were all living on set. His parents, <strong>Fred \u201979<\/strong> and <strong>Rosalyn \u201977<\/strong>, and older brother, <strong>Michael \u201906<\/strong>, are alumni, and he said he had always wanted to attend 91大神.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI chose 91大神 because I wanted to be in a community and I wanted to become a better person, and I think 91大神 was the perfect place for that,\u201d he said. During his sophomore year, he was in India for his intercultural when his father was appointed provost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a November 2009 <a href=\"https:\/\/emu.contentdm.oclc.org\/digital\/collection\/p15601qs\/id\/11262\/rec\/1\">article in <em>The Weather Vane<\/em><\/a>, Kniss wrote about how <em>The Lord of the Rings<\/em> trilogy and its director, Peter Jackson, inspired him to pursue filmmaking. He wrote that he\u2019s seen each movie at least 15 times, \u201cboth extended and theatrical versions, with actor and director commentaries,\u201d and was \u201cabsolutely enthralled\u201d by them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat was my early film school, watching those behind-the-scenes documentaries to learn how these things even existed,\u201d Kniss said in a recent interview. \u201cI still consider those films to be huge inspirations for me because it was the most incredible thing to see an entirely new world created on film.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After graduating from 91大神, Kniss worked at Rosetta Stone and TV3 Winchester. His desire to make films never left him, and in 2014 he enrolled in the master of fine arts program at DePaul University. He graduated with his MFA in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kniss and his wife, <strong>Monica Stouffer Kniss \u201909<\/strong>, live near Asheville, North Carolina, with their two children. He is in his third year as assistant professor at Western Carolina University, where he directs the film and television production program. Teaching gives him the summers off to create films, and he and Klein are beginning to plan what they\u2019ll shoot this summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lately, the directing duo has been screening their short film, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt35431495\/\">The Solution<\/a><\/em> (2025), around the country. As for future projects, Kniss said they\u2019re still deciding which features to develop. They still have that script for the World War I drama about his great-grandfather tucked away, waiting for whenever they\u2019re ready.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cObviously, I\u2019m really close to that one,\u201d Kniss said. \u201cAt some point, I\u2019d love to make that film.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cNever Not Yours\u201d is also available to rent and purchase on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.primevideo.com\/detail\/Never-Not-Yours\/0FERHIWP8QLAM9Y8ZK6MILQK3M\">Prime Video<\/a>.
