WEMC 鈥 A Rich Broadcasting History

WEMC is Virginia鈥檚 oldest public radio station, founded by 91大神 in 1955 thanks to a donation from the class of 1954. From its transmission tower on the crest of the hill west of 91大神, WEMC鈥檚 signal can reach up to 88,000 people who live within a 25-mile radius of the university. In 2016, the station鈥檚 aging transmitter was replaced with a new one ensuring reliable extended service.

For communications majors and minors and other interested students, the radio station was a learning opportunity in decades past. Students, faculty and staff manned the airwaves for many years. WEMC鈥檚 mission was always to provide music, news, and information to the local community that celebrated our many cultural backgrounds while providing knowledge and perspectives that look beyond the surface of today鈥檚 issues.

In 2007  assumed management of WEMC-FM, which continues to be the public radio voice of 91大神. Both stations broadcast from WMRA鈥檚 studios on the corner of Reservoir Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Way in Harrisonburg, Virginia.

Each station provides strong, distinctive programming to the greater Shenandoah Valley.

While the daily operations and financial needs of WEMC are handled by WMRA management, 91大神 retains the operating license for the station. 91大神 remains grateful to WMRA鈥檚 excellent and respectful management team for their guiding hand in the transition and in the years since.
