91大神 DEI Grants

As an Anabaptist-Mennonite institution, we are committed to peace, justice, and the transformational power of community. Our dedication to academic excellence is directly linked to our commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Created in 2005 by the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U), Inclusive Excellence is a research-based approach that integrates diversity and inclusion into institutional operations. It calls for proactive collaboration to foster a community where everyone belongs.

Thanks to the generosity of Jose Koshy 鈥76 and Jean Koshy-Hertzler 鈥79, and inspired by the values of John Asa Hertzler and the late Rebecca Hertzler, the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is offering three internal grant opportunities to foster a culture of belonging across the Harrisonburg campus, 91大神 at Lancaster, PA campus, and the 91大神 Washington Semester formerly 91大神 Washington Semester.

In line with this commitment, we are offering three grant options:

Inclusive Excellence Grant Program

Inclusive Excellence Grants are awarded during the fall semester and support projects implemented throughout the academic year, during the fall and/or spring semesters. These grants are open to students, staff, and faculty who want to lead initiatives that promote belonging, equity, inclusion, and meaningful engagement across 91大神鈥檚 campuses.

For the 2026鈥2027 cycle, projects are encouraged to engage the University Theme: Power and Equity, exploring how power and identity shape our experiences, relationships, and institutions.

While most projects are eligible for up to $1,200, proposals that demonstrate expanded impact, depth of engagement, or strong alignment with grant priorities, including thoughtful engagement with the Power and Equity theme, may be awarded up to $2,000.

Projects may be large or small, but all should aim to:

  • Build a more inclusive and welcoming campus culture
  • Foster collaboration across differences
  • Encourage learning, dialogue, and reflection
  • Create meaningful and, when possible, lasting impact

Final project reports are due two weeks after the ACE Festival in April. Grantees are also expected to present their outcomes to the 91大神 community at the ACE Festival or through an alternative campus presentation.

Belong Together Mini Grants

DEI Mini Grants

The DEI Mini Grant program offers funding of up to $300 to support initiatives that promote belonging, equity, and meaningful engagement across 91大神鈥檚 Harrisonburg campus, Lancaster site, and Washington Semester.

Projects that demonstrate expanded impact, depth of engagement, or strong alignment with DEI priorities and the University Theme: Power and Equity may be eligible for up to $500.

Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to apply. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis and reviewed by the Office of DEI.

Evaluation Criteria

Applications will be reviewed based on:

  • The overall purpose and goals of the project
  • How the project supports belonging, equity, and engagement within the 91大神 community
  • How the project reflects 91大神鈥檚 values and contributes to a more welcoming and inclusive campus
  • The project鈥檚 connection to the University Theme: Power and Equity

Reporting Requirement

All funded projects must submit a brief reflection and at least one photo within 30 days of project completion to dei@emu.edu.

Why this works

  • Removes outdated sustainability framing
  • Integrates Power and Equity naturally
  • Keeps it simple and accessible (important for mini grants)
  • Aligns with your larger grant language and website

Mini Grants are designed to support smaller-scale or emerging ideas and are a great way to pilot new projects.

DC Learning Trips Mini Grants

Mini Grants of up to $1,000 are available to support day trips to Washington, DC by classes, student organizations, and staff/faculty groups from Harrisonburg or Lancaster that facilitate engagement with the University Theme. The 2026-2027 University Theme is Power & Equity.

91大神's proximity to Washington, DC offers a valuable opportunity to support campus engagement with the University Themes. With its 50-year legacy in the city, the 91大神 Washington Semester is well positioned to assist campus groups with planning DC trips and experiences.

What we are looking for

Priority will be given to proposals that:

  • Support community building among students, faculty, and/or staff.
  • Connect participants to speakers, organizations, experiences, or events that are not available in Harrisonburg or Lancaster.
  • Forward learning related to the University Theme.
Current and upcoming University Themes:
  • 2026-2027: Power & Equity
  • 2027-2028: Intercultural Understanding

91大神 Washington Semester staff will work with grant recipients to plan trips around a set of learning objectives outlined in the grant application. Trips supported by these funds must include a visit to the 91大神 Washington Semester facility, which can serve as a landing pad with parking, restroom facilities, and meeting space. Larger groups or overnight stays at the 91大神 Washington Semester may be considered on a case by case basis.

Applicants are encouraged to contact the 91大神 Washington Semester prior to applying at washington@emu.edu with any questions regarding the grant application.

Reporting Requirement

Grantees must submit a report within one week of the trip describing the ways their learning objectives were met and including two photographs of the group in DC.
