Stories of Arrival and Belonging

Summer 2027

Come to Washington, DC and discover corners of the city you never knew existed! Cities are constantly shaped and reshaped by the stories and experiences of new arrivals, as much as by the claims and histories of those who have been there. And Washington, DC is no exception. In this three-week program, we will explore stories of identity, belonging, and community building amidst the diverse communities in and around our nation鈥檚 capital. We will learn how the city鈥檚 identity as a center of Black political power in the late 20th century鈥攖he first majority-Black major U.S. city鈥攈as been transformed through immigration and gentrification. We鈥檒l meet with organizers in immigrant communities who are advocating for services and the right to belong. We will volunteer with community-based organizations building capacity in lower-income communities by meeting social and emotional needs through gardening, youth programming, and medical services. We will encounter spaces and places of public storytelling: theater productions, poetry workshops, murals, local filmmaking, and oral histories. And we鈥檒l try our hand at telling our own stories of arrival and belonging. Outside of the monuments and the federal buildings in DC lies a city of remarkable diversity, unfathomable contrasts, and amazing cultural life. Come along to get to know a side of DC you鈥檝e never seen before!
